Yeah I was taken at minute one, well, outside of the vault. My young brain was amazed by the detail put into this game, and the plain fact that each time I played it I found something new to do or a new way to play (I still am a four years later) I did not have internet at the time but when they released the expansion disks I was thrown deeper, loving each and every second of the experience. From the base game all the way to point lookout (I just recently got the game of the year edition so I finally played mother ship zeta which I actually really enjoyed) I was lost for hundreds of hours trying to find each and every thing I could.
Sadly when my Xbox red ringed I lost this amazing game for the time, and went back to my PS2 and found my time invested in crime games and first person shooters, so when I got my current Xbox last year, I found a little gem called Fallout New Vegas.
The intro alone paints the story of the game, bright lights in the sealed off paradise in the wasteland, where only the rich (You need 2000 caps to get in it, but you can find other ways) can get in and be safe. The outside was more dangerous with the advent of Hardcore mode where you had to eat, sleep, drink water, and see doctors to heal serious wounds. The creatures as well got more dangerous, as deathclaws now had various forms, including the legendary which was the largest thing in the wastes.
So, two weeks ago I picked up the game of the year editions to both games and have to say this, each is its own separate game. Most people say that Fallout New Vegas feels like a expansion to Fallout 3, but this is a lie, with Fallout New Vegas' unique style and expansions, it paints a different story, in a different part of the U.S. than was shown in Fallout 3. The main difference I saw made me like Fallout New Vegas a little more was the fact that guns were more accurate and had a ADS system, which allowed even those with low levels in guns to be able to hold their own.
So in closing, picking one or the other is more of a personal choice really, if you want more of a creepy true feeling post apocalyptic story, get Fallout 3. If you want a more shooter feeling post apocalyptic game with some amazing environments (I think that Fallout 3 was a little dull and bland) get Fallout New Vegas. Or both at that case, and decide for yourself. :D
